We have been asked quite a few times what we are use on our shoots and are we using large cameras ubderwater? This post may be a little Geeky with some technical info.
As with any new start up company we have to juggle quality, ease of operation and the all important budget constraints. So lets start with how we capture video.
Along with our production partner Gumtree Digital we wanted to ensure all of our in-house productions ares shot with high resolution cameras. Something that can be used in a studio atmosphere or out in the field for both standups and run and gun. Obviously they have to be reliable, flexible, sturdy for daily use, lightweight and provide the quality we are looking for.
After extensive testing the answer was simple - Blackmagic 6K and Pryxis cameras. These magfinicent versitile cinema qualty cameras are ideal for shooting under any circumstances. Being able to shoot in 6K enables us to store footage that is forward compatible with future changes in television standards.
In addition Blackmagic RAW captures footage that can be easily color corrected in post production using Davinci Resolve Studio. Because Blackmagic RAW captures an uncompressed image it is able to be corrected and changed to bring out the beauty and depth of the subject/scene being shot.
In addition Gumtree Digital uses Blackmagic Design's Davinci Resolve Studio for post production and animation. With Resolve being a part of the Blackmagic family it is a seamless integration and workflow from capture to post production workflow.
Shooting underwater has been and continues to be task. Chosing a camera that can be used underwater that didn't exhaust the entire budget took some research. There are underwater housings for the 6K camera however it's cost is almost double that of the actual camera body.
It was decided to to work with our partners at Oceanic and use the incredible new Oceanic+ dive housing for iPhone. This robust and semi-compact dive housing gives us maneuverability and ease of use while still being able to capture video in full 4K RAW which integrates seamlessly with other footage captured.
Why did we go this rout rather than a studio type camera? Several factors came into play. The size of the housing makes it easy use. I't versatility in that it can be hand held like shown or easily placed on a tray with lights, a selfie stick or even a tripod. This makes it adaptable to use in any situation.
The internal camera features of the iPohe 15 Pro Max coupled with the Oceanic+ Dive Houseing make a great combination for our needs.
